Pakistan Army’s Somalia rescue mission book released at Military Institute

Book details 1993 Mogadishu operation and Pakistan’s role in US Rangers rescue.

ISLAMABAD: A book titled “Rescuing the US Rangers” documenting a historic Pakistan Army mission has been launched at the Army Institute of Military History, highlighting an important chapter of international military cooperation in Somalia.

The launch event drew a notable gathering, including army veterans, Ghazis, academicians, distinguished personalities, and members of the public, reflecting strong interest in the documented account of the operation.

Penned by Sarmad Zia, the book revisits the 1993 military operation in Mogadishu, Somalia, where Pakistani troops played a pivotal role in assisting and extracting stranded US Rangers during a high-risk security situation.

The work provides a detailed narrative of the mission’s strategic planning, battlefield complexities, and operational execution.

As highlighted during the ceremony, the publication also features exclusive interviews and firsthand testimonies of Pakistani military personnel who actively participated in the operation, offering rare, ground-level perspectives on the challenges faced in the field.

The event further included first-person reflections from veterans of the mission, who recounted critical moments and shared operational insights, giving attendees an immersive account of the historic engagement.

The book is being viewed as a valuable addition to Pakistan’s military historiography, documenting an operation often cited as a defining example of multinational coordination, tactical precision, and crisis-time military cooperation.
