The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has released a fact sheet detailing the current monsoon flood situation across the province.
In the past 24 hours, rainfall has been recorded in several districts, including Layyah, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Narowal, Bhakkar, Kasur, Lahore, and Sialkot. The PDMA forecasts further rain across most districts of Punjab over the next 24 hours.
Director General PDMA Punjab, Irfan Ali Kathia, has directed the local administrations to remain on high alert due to potential flooding risks.
Currently, the River Chenab is experiencing low-level flooding at the Marala point. Similarly, the Indus River is at low flood levels at Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa. Water flow in the Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers remains at normal levels. Streams and tributaries connected to major rivers are also flowing at normal levels.
Low to medium-level flood torrents passed through hill torrents last night, but no loss of life or property was reported due to timely alerts issued by the PDMA.
A low-level flood situation persists in the Basantar stream near Narowal.
Water levels at the major dams have also been reported: Tarbela Dam is currently 88% full, while Mangla Dam has reached 58% of its capacity. Water levels in Indian dams have reached up to 43%.
DG PDMA has urged the public to exercise caution during the monsoon season. Parents are specifically advised to keep children away from streams, rivers, and low-lying flood-prone areas to prevent accidents.
So far this monsoon season, 162 people have lost their lives in various rain-related incidents. Additionally, 564 people have been injured, 214 homes damaged, and 121 livestock animals have perished.
Following the directives of Punjab’s Chief Minister, financial assistance is being provided to the affected families.
