KARACHI: The traffic accidents claimed hundreds of lives in Karachi between January and May 2025, with 427 fatalities and 5,503 injuries reported by rescue authorities.
The majority of fatalities occurred in accidents involving heavy vehicles. Rescue officials reported that 133 deaths were caused by heavy transport, including: 52 deaths from collisions with trailers, 29 fatalities due to water tankers, 28 deaths from dumpers, 13 lives lost in bus accidents and 11 fatalities from Mazda trucks.
The deceased included 329 men, 43 women, and 55 children, highlighting the alarming human cost of traffic negligence and unsafe roads.
Despite efforts by the Sindh government to limit the operational hours of heavy vehicles and enforce vehicle fitness regulations, the rate of accidents remains unchanged, raising serious concerns about road safety enforcement and urban traffic management.
Earlier, Punjab Government has announced the imposition of Section 144 across the province from 1st to 10th Muharram to maintain law and order in the province.
According to the official statement, pillion riding will be banned on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. However, senior citizens and women will be exempt from this restriction.
The order also prohibits the display of weapons, possession of incendiary materials in public places, and any slogans, statements, or commentary that incite hatred or provoke unrest. These measures will be enforced strictly under Section 144.
