Rawalpindi: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi has officially declared a rain emergency and raised its alert status amid ongoing heavy rainfall across the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
The decision follows a forecast from the Meteorological Department predicting continuous and significant precipitation throughout the day.
Muhammad Saleem Ashraf, Managing Director of WASA, confirmed that specialized field teams equipped with heavy machinery have been deployed strategically in low-lying areas to prevent urban flooding and address drainage issues.
According to the MD, various locations in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have recorded rainfall exceeding 80 millimeters.
Notable measurements include 66 millimeters at Bokada Point, 55 millimeters in Shamsabad, 53 millimeters at Pirwadhai, 52 millimeters in Syedpur, and 41 millimeters at Kachehri. Other areas such as Goldha and PMD Office reported 25 and 32 millimeters respectively.
WASA officials are closely monitoring all major drains, including the critical Nala Lai. Currently, water levels in Nala Lai are within normal limits, with 9 feet at Katarian and 5 feet at the Gowalmandi Bridge.
The agency assured residents of its full preparedness to handle any emergencies arising from the heavy downpour. Citizens are advised to stay informed, exercise caution, and remain vigilant as the weather situation develops.
