According to court documents revealed on Monday, the British government intends to begin deporting asylum seekers on July 23, although the controversial scheme depends on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative party winning the upcoming election.

Sunak's flagship policy of sending asylum seekers who arrived in Britain to the East African nation has faced legal and parliamentary obstacles, preventing it from getting off the ground.

Recently, Sunak stated that the deportation flights would not depart before an election on July 4. However, he has promised that if he wins, they would begin soon after. Sunak is trailing the opposition Labor Party by about 20 points in opinion polls, and it has promised to scrap the plan.

In documents submitted to the London High Court as part of a charity's challenge to the policy, government lawyers stated that the intention was "to effect removals with a flight to Rwanda on 23 July 2024 (and not before)."
