A Russian missile strike on the eastern-central Ukrainian city of Dnipro killed four people and wounded 40 on Monday, Ukrainian officials reported.
The attack occurred as diplomatic activity intensified to end the nearly four-year conflict, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visiting Paris and his team holding talks in Washington just a day earlier.
Vladyslav Haivanenko, acting governor of Dnipropetrovsk region, said on Telegram that 11 of the injured were in serious condition. He added that search and rescue operations at the site had concluded.
Ukraine’s emergency services reported extensive damage, including to car service stations, other businesses, an office building, and 49 vehicles.
Vitalii Kovalenko, who works in a car repair shop struck by the missile, recounted the chaos: “Everyone fell to the floor, then we started checking on employees. I ran upstairs and saw one colleague covered in shrapnel, but everyone survived.” Photos shared on Telegram showed firefighters at the scene, emergency personnel evacuating victims on stretchers, and at least one body in a black bag.
Dnipro and the surrounding region have repeatedly been targeted by Russian missile and drone attacks, resulting in civilian casualties and significant destruction to housing, industry, and infrastructure.
There has been no immediate response from Russia regarding the strike.
