U.S. President Donald Trump urged Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday to stop expanding production in India and focus on increasing manufacturing in the United States. He made these remarks during a speech while outlining America’s trade strategy.

Trump said he recently confronted Tim Cook about Apple’s growing investment in India. “I treated you very well,” he told Cook, “but now I hear you’re building all over India. I don’t want that.” Analysts expect Apple to produce up to 25% of its iPhones in India over the next few years.

The president expressed frustration, stating that Apple had already promised a \$500 billion investment in the U.S. earlier this year. He claimed that Apple would now increase its U.S. output, though he did not provide specific details. Currently, Apple manufactures some Mac Pro units in the U.S. and plans to build AI-related servers in Texas, but it still produces most iPhones in China and, increasingly, in India.

Apple is shifting production to India as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on China. Its main partner, Foxconn, recently received approval from the Indian government to build a semiconductor plant in partnership with HCL Group. India offers attractive incentives, while the U.S. faces higher labor costs. Experts warn that manufacturing iPhones in America could drive prices up to between \$1,500 and \$3,500 per device.

Trump also criticized India’s trade policies, calling the country “one of the highest tariff nations in the world.” He noted that India had offered to waive some tariffs under a proposed trade deal. In response, the U.S. imposed a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, applying it temporarily.
