Sky-watchers are in for a celestial spectacle this weekend as February’s full moon, known as the Snow Moon, prepares to illuminate the evening sky.
The lunar display will reach its peak brilliance at 5:09 PM ET on Sunday, near sunset, appearing especially radiant low on the horizon. Enthusiasts also have multiple chances to witness the moon as it will look full on Saturday and Monday, ensuring no one misses this breathtaking event.
Noah Petro, head of NASA’s Planetary, Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Laboratory, explained that the moon remains captivating even outside its exact peak.
The Snow Moon derives its name from the heavy winter snowfall across North America, adding seasonal charm to this lunar phenomenon.
Coinciding with NASA’s anticipated Artemis II mission, Noah Petro encouraged observers to study the moon’s geography and surface features. “Go out, observe it full or partially full, and explore its unique characteristics as it cycles through its phases a perfect way to celebrate humanity’s return to the moon,” he said.
Noah Petro added that the moon’s striking light and shadow patterns are visible to the naked eye, while telescopes reveal craters and intricate surface details. “This is an incredible opportunity for casual observers to immerse themselves in the full majesty of our lunar neighbor,” he noted.
