Bengaluru rains causes Chaos, 20 flights delayed, 4 diverted

  • Heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted Karnataka airport, causing delays for over 20 flights.
  • An Air India flight from Delhi and four Indigo flights were diverted to Chennai.
  • Kempegowda International Airport remained normal until 9 PM.
Heavy rain in Bengaluru on Monday night caused chaos at the airport, delaying at least 20 flights and diverting several others. The city has faced severe rainfall, prompting school closures for the second time in a week.

On Monday night, over twenty flights heading to the Karnataka airport experienced delays as heavy rain and thunderstorms battered the city, particularly its northern regions. An Air India flight from Delhi and four Indigo flights were diverted to Chennai. According to sources, flight landings at Kempegowda International Airport, located in the northern suburb of Devanahalli, remained normal until 9 PM on Monday.

Delays began for flights following the heavy rain, with more delays reportedly expected. Yelahanka and other northern Bengaluru areas, such as Sahakar Nagar, experienced torrential rain on Monday night. Users flooded social media with videos and posts showing flooded roads and underpasses. The railway underpass in Sahakar Nagar, near the Mall of Asia, became submerged, leaving multiple cars trapped in water.

The heavy rain that has battered the city for the past two days has disrupted normal life and caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas and roads. Authorities closed schools and Anganwadi centers on Monday as a precaution.

This marks the second time within a week that authorities have closed schools in Bengaluru due to rain. In several parts of the city, people waded through flooded roads to reach their destinations. Additionally, several trees crashed down, affecting vehicular movement.

The Met department has warned of heavy rainfall on Tuesday in parts of south interior Karnataka, coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

The weather office issued an orange alert for Bengaluru on Monday, indicating very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm.

In a bulletin, it said, "Moderate to heavy Rain/thundershowers accompanied by lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural districts."
