Along the roadsides, including prominent areas like Power House and North Karachi, scores of tables are set up by volunteers from various NGOs and community organizations.
Among these, Helping Hands Trust (HHT), a non-profit organization founded by Advocate Mr. Anwer Ali Faridi, stands out for its dedicated service to the needy. Since its establishment in 2004, HHT has been steadfast in its mission to assist the underprivileged regardless of caste, creed, gender, or color. Audited by Salah-Ud-Din & Co, the organization holds tax exemption status, ensuring transparency in its operations.
As the call for the maghrib prayer echoes from nearby mosques, crowds of people of all ages gather around the tables or spread out on plastic mats laid on the footpaths. Motorists hastily pull over, joining the communal gatherings to break their fast. Volunteers distribute traditional delicacies and drinks, while packets of food and bottles of water and juice are handed out to those in vehicles and public transport who continue their journey.
This tradition of extending hospitality during Ramadan is deeply ingrained in Karachi's culture. Hundreds of stalls dot the city's corners, offering free meals and beverages throughout the holy month. Homeless individuals, vendors, rickshaw and taxi drivers, laborers, beggars, and even non-fasting individuals are welcomed to partake in the generosity of the community.
The spirit of compassion and unity shines bright as Karachiites come together to share blessings and foster a sense of belonging during Ramadan. These Iftar gatherings serve as a testament to the city's rich tradition of generosity and communal harmony, reaffirming the values of compassion and solidarity cherished by its residents.
