NASA plans new communication network for Moon andMars, seeks proposals from U.S. companies

NASA has officially invited proposals from American companies to help develop a new high-bandwidth, highly reliable communication and navigation system to ensure seamless connectivity between the Moon, Mars, and Earth-based stations.

On July 7, NASA issued a formal request for proposals (RFP) aimed at building infrastructure to support timely communication and navigation for future lunar and Martian missions. The goal is to establish a robust system that can facilitate both scientific exploration and commercial activities in deep space.

Greg Heckler, Deputy Manager of NASA's Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program, emphasized the significance of public-private partnerships in advancing communication and navigation technologies.

“These collaborations empower our astronauts, vehicles, spacecraft, and all NASA missions to push humanity’s reach across the Moon, Mars, and beyond,” he said.

NASA believes that this new communication network will not only support upcoming missions but also help create a thriving marketplace for scientific, research, and economic activities in space—benefiting both NASA and private space companies.

Currently, over 100 government and private missions rely on NASA's Near Space Network and Deep Space Network, both managed by the SCaN program. These networks serve as critical lifelines for transmitting data and ensuring mission success.

In December 2024, NASA awarded contracts for its Near Space Network to four companies: Intuitive Machines (Houston), Kongsberg Satellite Services (Norway), SSC Space U.S. Inc. (Pennsylvania), and Viasat Inc. (Georgia).

Additionally, NASA provided funding between $200,000 and $300,000 each to nine private companies to conduct Mars mission experiments. These efforts are part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, which envisions numerous missions to the Red Planet over the next two decades.

The broader objective behind these initiatives is to pave the way for sustainable human presence on the Moon, support cargo missions, and prepare for future crewed missions to Mars.
