For almost 20 years, Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved success on nearly every stage in football. He has dominated the UEFA Champions League, won international trophies with Portugal and broken goal-scoring records around the world.
However, one record followed him throughout his career, he had never scored in a FIFA World Cup knockout match. That finally changed in Toronto.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain ended that long wait by scoring a second-half penalty against Croatia, adding another major milestone to his career and helping Portugal continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey.

When Portugal were awarded a penalty in the 67th minute, there was no doubt about who would take it.
Ronaldo calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to score his first-ever World Cup knockout goal. It was a historic moment for him, as he had previously played eight knockout matches across five World Cups without scoring.
Before this match, all 10 of Ronaldo’s World Cup goals had come in the group stage, including two against Uzbekistan earlier in the tournament.
His two World Cup assists also came in the group stage, making this breakthrough even more significant.
For a player known for performing under pressure, his knockout record had always stood out.
Before the match against Croatia, Ronaldo had taken 29 shots in knockout matches without scoring, the most by any player since 1966, tied with Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos.
That unwanted record is now gone. The penalty was also Ronaldo’s only touch inside Croatia’s penalty area during his 81 minutes on the pitch, showing that even a single chance can be enough for one of football’s greatest finishers.
His goal did more than end a personal drought.
At 41 years and 147 days, Ronaldo became the oldest player ever to score in a World Cup knockout match, adding another record to his career.
The Portugal captain continues to make football history, and this achievement highlights his longevity at the highest level.
Portugal will now play one of the biggest matches of the tournament. They will face Spain in Dallas on July 6 in a Round of 16 clash between two of Europe’s strongest teams.
