Sukkur: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said the country is facing a severe flood emergency, which has badly affected Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh.
He stated that floods have caused heavy loss of life and property, leaving many people homeless in Punjab and bringing destruction to cities like Multan. Bilawal added that farmers, already struggling, now face even greater difficulties. He emphasized that supporting farmers today can help avoid food security problems in the future.
Sindh Government and Administration’s Steps:
Bilawal Bhutto stated that the Sindh government and local administration are fully prepared to address the flood situation. Authorities are ensuring the timely evacuation of people and the relocation of livestock from vulnerable areas. He was also briefed on the situation at Guddu Barrage.Bilawal emphasized that the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) is the primary source of immediate relief for flood victims. He urged the Prime Minister to use BISP to assist flood-hit families and questioned why the program has not provided support yet.
Stance on Dams:
Speaking on controversial dams, Bilawal said the PPP is not against building dams but opposes projects that lack national consensus. He recalled that the PPP laid the foundation of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam but criticized talk of new dams on the Indus during the flood crisis, calling it “incomprehensible.”Bilawal warned that discussing disputed dam damages would affect Pakistan’s case internationally. He clarified that PPP supports only those dams that are technically sound.
Call for Unity and National Solidarity:
Bilawal urged political parties and provinces to put aside differences and work together to face natural disasters. He said, “Modi has launched a historic attack on the Indus River, and now is the time for our provinces to stand as brothers.”Future Strategy:
The PPP Chairman highlighted flaws in past policies, pointing to housing societies built on river belts.
