ISLAMABAD: The PTI, as the main opposition party, strongly opposes any potential move by the PML-N-led ruling coalition regarding judicial reforms.
They specifically stated their resistance against any legislation seen as politically motivated aimed at extending the tenure of the country's top judge.
Asad Qaiser, a senior PTI leader and former National Assembly speaker, made these remarks in response to the Law and Justice Minister Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar's recent statement hinting at constitutional amendments to alter the traditional process of selecting judges for the Supreme Court and high courts.
The PTI leader, in a video statement shared on social media, firmly stated their opposition to any proposed amendments regarding judges' appointments or the extension of the Chief Justice's service, citing political motives behind such measures.
This stance comes amidst discussions on social media regarding the tenure of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa.
The government has been reported to consider fixed terms for the top judge, along with broader judicial reforms.
The Law Minister had mentioned a balance in judge appointments under the 18th Amendment, while Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah suggested fixing the CJP's term. Currently, CJP Isa is set to retire in October 2024, but any legislation altering the term of the Chief Justice could extend his tenure automatically.
