Pakistan and the Federated States of Micronesia, a beautiful island nation in the western Pacific Ocean, have officially established diplomatic relations. The signing ceremony took place on Friday in New York at Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Ambassador Jeem S. Lippwe of Micronesia signed the joint communiqué, with diplomats from both sides in attendance, including Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Usman Jadoon.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar noted that this milestone came right as Pakistan celebrated its Independence Day, making it even more special. He said the new ties would open doors for cooperation in areas like human resource development, capacity building, climate change, and closer work at the UN on peace and security. He also pointed out that Pakistan is now the 100th country with which Micronesia has formal diplomatic relations.
Ambassador Lippwe expressed his happiness at the start of this new chapter of friendship and thanked Pakistan for supporting the opening of UN offices in Micronesia. He congratulated Pakistan on its Independence Day and said he looked forward to working closely with his Pakistani counterpart to strengthen bilateral ties.
Before the ceremony, both ambassadors met briefly to discuss potential cooperation both at the UN and on a bilateral level.
