Gujrat city may have to wait until the end of 2025 to be included in Punjab’s electric bus project.
In the second phase of the plan, 200 electric buses will be given to nine cities, including Gujjar Khan, Jhelum, Chakwal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang and Rajanpur.
Gujrat, however, has not been included in this list, along with Sialkot, Hafizabad and Narowal.
Officials said that Gujrat could finally get at least 28 electric buses by December 2025. The suggested routes for these buses include Gujrat to Lalamusa, Jalalpur Jattan, Mungowal and Daulat Nagar, with the possibility of expanding services later.
Regular passengers of these routes have been urging the local authorities and political leaders to speed up the launch of this modern transport system.
The Punjab Transport Department stated that around 206 electric buses will be provided to the Gujranwala and Gujrat regions. An investment of 7.5 billion rupees has been set aside for charging stations and 8.5 billion rupees for the purchase of buses.
According to the allocation plan, Gujranwala will get 88 buses, Sialkot 45, Gujrat 28, Hafizabad 16, Mandi Bahauddin 12, Narowal 7 and Wazirabad 7. Earlier this month, the Punjab government started the service on the Gujranwala-Wazirabad route, marking the beginning of the first phase of the project.
