Once a package of rice is opened, transfer it to a clean, dry, airtight container. Glass, stainless steel or food-grade plastic containers with secure lids can help keep out moisture, dust and pantry insects.
The container should remain tightly sealed when the rice is not being used. Keeping the rice dry is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of pests and spoilage.
The storage location also plays an important role. Rice should be kept in a cool, dry cupboard away from direct sunlight, water and areas with high humidity.
Avoid storing rice near stoves or other heat-producing appliances, as heat and moisture can create conditions that encourage insect activity.
