Washington: U.S President Donald Trump is touting what he says is a record of unprecedented peacemaking, claiming he has ended as many as ten wars during his presidency.
Speaking at the White House on Friday, Trump said he had “settled seven wars,” but added that if “pre-wars” are included, “it would be 10.” The president did not explain what he meant by “pre-wars,” but has repeatedly pointed to his efforts to cool tensions in flashpoints across the globe.
Earlier in this week, when U.S President Donald Trump met President Volodymyr Zelenskky and other European leaders at the at White House he told supporters that he had resolved “six wars in six months,” citing disputes involving India and Pakistan, Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, Iran and Israel, Cambodia and Thailand, and Ethiopia and Egypt. He later increased the figure to seven in a television interview.
The president has long argued that his diplomacy from South Asia to the Middle East, should be recognized as historic.
He frequently contrasts his record with that of former President Barack Obama, who controversially won the Nobel Peace Prize just 9 months into his first term. Several World leaders including from Pakistan even nominated Trump for the award this summer.
Still, Trump’s boldest claim remains unfulfilled. Despite high-profile summits with Vladimir Putin and European leaders, the war in Ukraine continues, with no sign of the quick resolution Trump has promised.
For now, Trump is putting his own spin on the numbers. Whether seven, ten, or somewhere in between, he insists his presidency has been defined by ending wars, not starting them.
The Trump administration entered White House discussions under the assumption that Russia would be open to NATO-style, Western-supported security guarantees for Ukraine — but Russia quickly dismissed the idea.
