KARACHI: Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) has voiced concerns about the rising number of unnecessary C-sections or cesarean section, particularly in private health facilities.
According to the Commission, 65% of healthcare services in the province are being provided by private hospitals, where some gynecologists reportedly prefer surgical deliveries for convenience rather than medical necessity.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), SHCC, Dr Ahsan Qavi, stated that patients who suspect malpractice can file complaints with the Commission. He added that the Commission’s digital monitoring system is 80% complete and is expected to be fully digitized within a year.
As part of this system, hospitals will be required to report data on dengue, malaria, HIV, and other infections, enabling patients—particularly expectant mothers—to make informed decisions by reviewing hospitals’ delivery and infection control records.
The SHCC has emphasized the urgent need to establish Infection Control Committees within hospitals and warned that without proper infection control, hospitals risk becoming breeding grounds for dangerous pathogens.
These initiatives aim to enhance healthcare quality and reduce the rate of medically unnecessary C-sections, ensuring better outcomes for both mothers and newborns across Sindh.
