PTI founder’s detention politically motivated, illegal: UN  body

New York: The United Nations(UN) Human Rights Working Group has termed the decision to detain Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf founder Imran Khan as arbitrary and against international law.

The legal opinion of the UN Working Group has come out on the petition filed in the United Nations by the eminent law firm of Zulfi Bukhari against the arrest of founder PTI Imran Khan, in which the immediate release of Imran Khan has demanded.

A report by the United Nations Human Rights Working Group said that there was no legal justification for the arrest of the PTI founder, apparently aimed at disqualifying him.

The report called on the government to allow the working group to visit Pakistan and conduct an independent investigation into the conditions in the PTI founder's prison.

The working group has expressed concern that the founder PTI was not given the right to defend itself while the right to cross-examine the lawyers was taken away and given to the government lawyers.

The working group said that the government of Pakistan was contacted to know the position on this issue, but no response was received.
