ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s “Iron Lady” Muniba Mazari has achieved another historic milestone as she has been entrusted with a prestigious global responsibility by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
Mazari has been appointed as an Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), joining the ranks of world leaders and changemakers advancing the UN’s 2030 Agenda.
Her formal appointment was made on March 24, 2025, marking a significant recognition of her role as an inspirational voice for inclusion, resilience, and sustainable progress.
Muniba Mazari’s journey is one that defies the odds. Left paralyzed from the waist down after a tragic car accident at age 21, she refused to let circumstances define her.
From the quiet city of Rahim Yar Khan to the heart of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, she transformed her life and in doing so, began transforming the lives of millions.
Her appointment as an SDG Advocate is not just a recognition of her achievements it’s a call to action, a symbol of inclusion, and a testament to resilience.
In his official statement, Secretary-General Guterres said: "Muniba Mazari is a source of inspiration and motivation for many. Her voice is powerful on inclusion and gender equality, and her leadership and courage embody the true spirit of the SDGs. I am confident she will carry this vision to a global audience and help move the world toward action."
Muniba Mazari now joins a prestigious lineup of world leaders, including Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, who serve as global SDG Advocates. Her appointment reflects her longstanding commitment to uplifting marginalized voices, especially women, persons with disabilities, and youth.
