U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed on the "first phase" of a ceasefire deal aimed at halting the devastating war in Gaza.
Trump made the announcement via social media, describing the agreement as a “major breakthrough” and praising the efforts of international mediators. “Israel and Hamas have both agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire. This is a tremendous step toward peace,” he wrote.
Qatar, which has played a central role in mediating the talks, confirmed the agreement. In a statement, the Qatari foreign ministry said that both parties had agreed on “all the provisions and implementation mechanisms” of the first phase of the ceasefire plan.
Hamas released a statement confirming the agreement, stating that it includes an end to military operations in Gaza, the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, the entry of urgent humanitarian aid, and a phased prisoner exchange deal.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded positively, calling it “a great day for Israel.” He announced plans to convene his government on Thursday to formally approve the agreement.
President Trump announced that all hostages would soon be released and that Israel would withdraw its forces to the agreed limit, signaling a shift toward de-escalation in the region. Calling the development "the first step toward lasting and sustainable peace," Trump expressed optimism about the broader implications of the agreement.
"Today is a great day for Israel, the Arab and Muslim world, neighboring countries, and America," said Trump, highlighting the historic significance of the developments.
The ceasefire talks follow nearly a year of intense conflict. Since Israel launched its offensive on Gaza in October 2023, over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 169,000 wounded, according to Gaza health authorities. Thousands more remain missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings.
