Hamas has announced conditional support for significant parts of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point ceasefire proposal aimed at ending the nearly two-year-long war in Gaza, but is calling for further negotiations on several points.
According to a source speaking to Al Jazeera, Hamas delivered its formal response to the U.S. administration on Friday, just ahead of the Sunday deadline set by President Trump.
The proposal includes an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of all remaining Israeli captives — believed to include 20 living individuals out of 48 total — for Palestinian prisoners, the establishment of a transitional government in Gaza under international oversight, and the eventual disarmament of Hamas.
In its response, Hamas agreed in principle to the prisoner exchange "according to the exchange formula outlined in President Trump’s proposal," and stated its willingness to initiate immediate mediated negotiations to finalize the terms. However, the group did not address the issue of disarmament in its statement.
Hamas also expressed readiness to transfer governance of Gaza to a "Palestinian body of independents (technocrats)" based on national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic nations.
The partial agreement marks a potential diplomatic opening in the deadlocked conflict, though key issues — particularly the future of Hamas’s military capabilities — remain unresolved.
On the other side, on Friday Trump posted on Truth "Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!"
"Right now, it's far too dangerous to do that. We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East."
Trump later posted a short video message in which he hailed Hamas's statement and thanked US allies including Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Jordan for mediating.

"This is a very special day, maybe unprecedented," Trump said from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, adding that "I look forward to having the hostages come home to their parents."
