Church attack in U.S. state of Michigan: 4 killed, 8 injured

Chaos and bloodshed swept through a Grand Blanc Township church Sunday morning in Michigan has left four people dead and at least eight others injured after a man rammed a vehicle into the building, sparking a fire, and opened fire on attendees.

Hundreds were present during the service when chaos unfolded. The suspect, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, was killed in a shootout with police in the church parking lot. According to officials, Sanford engaged in gunfire with officers shortly after the attack began.

The FBI is investigating the assault as an "act of targeted violence", though the suspect’s motive remains unclear at this time. Law enforcement authorities are working to determine whether the attack was ideologically driven or personal in nature.

President Donald Trump condemned the attack, saying, “Violent incidents in the country must come to an end.”

Authorities commended the bravery of churchgoers who acted quickly to protect children during the attack. "Many showed acts of extreme courage by sheltering children and moving them to safety under chaotic and terrifying circumstances," police said.
