WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that Iran is interested in reaching a deal, but he believes the country is negotiating from a weakened position.
Speaking to the media, Trump said Iran “wants an agreement” but added that it “has nothing left,” while claiming he is not satisfied with Tehran’s latest proposal.
He said the United States is expecting Iran to present more “reasonable” terms for any potential agreement.
Trump stated that Washington has already presented its final proposals and confirmed that limited telephone communication with Iran is ongoing.
However, he expressed doubt that both sides would ultimately reach a deal, saying the outcome depends entirely on Iran’s choices.
Trump also remarked that the United States holds Pakistan in high regard, adding that he respects Pakistan’s leadership, including the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asif Munir.
He added that Iran must decide whether it “wants to end things permanently or make a deal,” describing these as the only two options.
The US president further claimed that Iran’s leadership is divided and issuing inconsistent statements, and said there is no internal unity within the Iranian system.
Reiterating his stance on nuclear policy, Trump said the United States does not want Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. He also claimed that Iran’s naval and air capabilities have been significantly weakened.
Highlighting U.S. military strength, he said America possesses “the best armed forces in the world.”c
