Greta Thunberg Faces Trial Over Oil Protest Activism

  • Greta Thunberg on trial for 2023 oil protest violation.
  • Pleaded not guilty with four co-defendants.
  • Defended climate activists outside court, stating "climate protest is not a crime."
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, renowned for her global advocacy on climate change, appeared in court on Thursday to face trial over a public order violation linked to her protest outside a London oil and gas conference last year. Thunberg, along with four co-defendants aged 19 to 59, entered a not-guilty plea to a single charge under the Public Order Act at Westminster Magistrates Court.

The incident took place outside a hotel where the Energy Intelligence Forum was hosting oil and gas business officials. Thunberg was taken into custody on October 17, 2023, after allegedly refusing to relocate to the approved protest location despite a last warning from two metropolitan police officers.

The 21-year-old activist rose to international prominence in 2018 when she staged a solitary protest in front of the Swedish parliament, sparking a global movement. On her way to the court, Thunberg navigated past cameras and police amidst chants from environmental activists proclaiming, "climate protest is not a crime."

Following the day's proceedings, Thunberg, standing outside the court with her co-defendants, defended climate activists facing legal actions, stating, "We must remember who the real enemy is." Known for pressuring world leaders to take urgent action against climate change, Greta Thunberg remains a prominent figure in the global environmental movement.
