Fifty Injured as New Zealand-Bound Flight Encounters 'Technical' issue

Passenger Brian Jokat recounted the moment when individuals were thrown towards the roof of a plane traveling from Australia to New Zealand during what was characterized as a mid-air "technical event." Some sustained head injuries as the LatAm Airlines jet unexpectedly dropped, dislodging passengers from their seats.

Fifty individuals sustained injuries, and emergency services transported 12 to the hospital upon landing in Auckland.

Emergency services reported that one person was in serious condition.

In total, New Zealand's St. John Ambulance Service stated that it had "assessed and treated approximately" 50 patients who were traveling on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which had departed from Sydney.

Speaking to the private news agency, Mr. Jokat revealed that people had hit the ceiling with such force "some of the roof panels were broken" while others had been thrown down the aisles after the plane "dropped unlike anything" he had ever experienced before.

"There was blood coming from several people's heads and people were yelling and screaming and it was chaos," Mr Jokat added.

Radio New Zealand reported that another passenger informed them about witnessing people "flying around," which resulted in traces of their blood being left on the ceiling.

According to one passenger, Radio New Zealand reported that some individuals onboard were not wearing their seatbelts.

FlightAware, an airline tracker, indicates that the plane experienced a loss of altitude about two hours into the three-hour flight between the two cities, although details regarding the "technical event" or its cause remain undisclosed.

Latam Airlines expressed deep regret for any inconvenience and discomfort caused to its passengers due to the situation. They stated that "a technical event during the flight" had resulted in a strong movement but did not offer further information.

"The plane landed at Auckland Airport as scheduled," it added.

RNZ reported that the aircraft, which was scheduled to fly from Auckland to Santiago, the capital of Chile, where the South American carrier is based, had its flight canceled. Additionally, RNZ reported that a new flight was scheduled for Tuesday.
