Australia are on high alert as an intense heatwave approaches, with temperatures forecasted to hit the low 40s in some areas by Saturday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued heatwave warnings across New South Wales, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, with an extreme warning in place for the NSW south coast—the highest level of alert.
Temperatures began rising on Thursday, and meteorologists expect the heatwave to peak on Friday and Saturday, bringing high 30s and low 40s to affected areas. The bureau defines a heatwave warning as a period of at least three days of unusually hot maximum and minimum temperatures.
An extreme warning has been issued for the NSW south coast, while severe heatwave alerts are in place for the Hunter, metropolitan Sydney, Illawarra, southern tablelands, and Snowy Mountains regions. Affected communities include Sydney, Newcastle, Batemans Bay, Gosford, Camden, Mona Vale, Nowra, Richmond, and Wollongong.
Senior meteorologist emphasized the danger, stating, “Extreme means that it’s dangerous for everyone, even for healthy people, if you don’t take precautions.” The effects of the heat are cumulative, with the third day typically being the most perilous.
Vulnerable populations such as the elderly, pregnant women, infants, children, and individuals with medical conditions are at heightened risk during these severe conditions. Authorities urge residents to stay informed, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions to protect themselves during this dangerous heatwave.
