Karachi: According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), cold and dry weather continues to prevail in Karachi under the influence of cool northeasterly winds.

The department said the ongoing cold spell is expected to persist until the end of January, keeping temperatures low across the city.

The minimum temperature recorded today was 11.5°C, while humidity levels stood at 48 percent. PMD forecasts the maximum temperature to range between 20°C and 22°C.

Northeasterly winds are blowing at a speed of around 20 kilometres per hour, with no rainfall expected in Karachi at present.

Nationwide weather outlook

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide weather advisory, forecasting cloudy skies with intermittent rain and snowfall across upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan, and northern Punjab.

In mountainous areas, moderate to heavy snowfall is likely at isolated locations, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.

Southern Punjab and upper Sindh may also experience scattered rain with gusty winds and thunder. Islamabad and surrounding areas are expected to remain cold and partly cloudy, with rain and thunderstorms likely during the evening or night.

Authorities have warned that heavy snowfall from tonight through tomorrow could lead to road closures in Naran, Kaghan, Dir and Swat. Similar disruptions are anticipated in Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Shangla, while routes in Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree and Galiyat may also be affected.

In Kashmir and Balochistan, including Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli, Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Nushki, Harnai and Zhob, slippery roads and traffic disruptions are expected due to rain and snowfall. PMD has also cautioned about the risk of landslides and avalanches in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

In Chaman, rainfall has begun in plain areas, while snowfall continues across nearby mountain ranges including Dara Khojak, Khwaja Imran and Toba Achakzai. The district administration has launched an operation to reopen blocked routes at Dara Khojak, as rain and snowfall persist in surrounding regions.

Tourists and commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautionary measures during the ongoing severe weather conditions.
