WhatsApp is testing a new feature for iPhone users that shows a green dot on a contact’s profile picture when they are actively using the app, according to beta tracker reports.
The feature appears in iOS beta version and places a small green indicator at the bottom right corner of a user’s profile photo. The dot disappears when the person goes offline.
This update builds on WhatsApp’s existing “last seen” and online status tools by giving users a more real time view of activity. It works in a similar way to status indicators already used on platforms like Instagram and Apple’s iMessage.

At this stage, the green dot is only visible on the contact info page and not in the main chat list. This limits how often users may notice it, but the feature could expand to chats in future updates.
WhatsApp has confirmed that privacy settings will still apply. Users who hide their online status will not show the green indicator, ensuring existing privacy choices remain in control.
The feature is still in testing, and WhatsApp has not announced a public release date. If development continues smoothly, it is expected to roll out to both iPhone and Android users in a future update.
The update is part of a wider set of new features being tested, including usernames, improved privacy tools, and new message options.
