The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has called on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to work towards reducing mobile phone taxes, aiming to make devices more affordable for the public.
Acknowledging that tax adjustments fall under the Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) jurisdiction, the committee emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to provide financial relief in the telecom sector.
During a meeting on Wednesday, the Secretary of IT and Telecom provided updates on Pakistan's digital progress. He noted that the nation's liberalization policy and the upcoming 5G rollout are expected to significantly enhance internet services across the country.
The secretary also reported a remarkable 37% increase in IT exports, which reached $3.3 billion in the first 11 months of 2024, compared to $2.4 billion during the same period in 2023. However, he acknowledged the need for growth acceleration, citing a 23% compound annual growth rate over the past five years.
Infrastructure development was another key highlight, with plans to introduce four additional submarine cables to improve internet connectivity. Three of these cables are expected to become operational by 2025.
Despite these advancements, senators expressed concerns over persistent connectivity issues in remote regions like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Challenges such as frequent internet disruptions and difficulties in acquiring permits for mobile tower installations were identified as pressing issues.
The committee underscored the importance of resolving these challenges to ensure equitable access to digital services across Pakistan.
