Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has pledged to revamp Pakistan's internet infrastructure, ensuring optimal speeds and strengthening the telecom sector's capabilities. She affirmed her ministry’s commitment to seamless industry operations and enhanced digital connectivity.
Acknowledging recent cyberattacks, Khawaja emphasized swift action to fortify Pakistan’s digital defenses. "My ministry is leaving no stone unturned to ensure seamless continuity in the industry".
"The recent surge in cyber attacks has put us on high alert and we are taking swift and decisive action to address these challenges and fortify our digital defenses," she stated.
The minister outlined the government’s efforts to upgrade systems, improve tower density, expand broadband access, and tackle cybersecurity concerns. These measures aim to enhance coverage, promote economic growth, and ensure citizens have reliable and secure internet services.
Regarding user concerns, Khawaja assured that the Ministry of Interior collaborates with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to investigate and resolve issues affecting internet performance, such as disruptions in video uploads. She stressed that maintaining 100% internet speed remains a priority.
Khawaja revealed that the Interior Minister personally intervenes to expedite solutions when needed. While acknowledging existing challenges, she assured that the government is diligently addressing them.
The minister also highlighted the importance of freedom of expression, noting that temporary disruptions to digital platforms do not curtail citizens' rights. She underscored the government’s dedication to creating a balanced and robust digital environment for all.
