In the midst of a government showdown, Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude has quietly become the app everyone is watching.

Downloads are surging daily users are skyrocketing, and the world is taking notice all after CEO Dario Amodei refused to let the U.S. government turn his AI into a tool for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weaponry.

Instead of diminishing its appeal Anthropic’s defiance has galvanized public interest, drawing users worldwide who are captivated by both the technology and its ethical stance.

According to Appfigures, Claude’s U.S. mobile downloads now surpass ChatGPT, recording 149,000 daily downloads compared to ChatGPT’s 124,000.

Similarweb reports that Claude’s iOS and Android apps reached 11.3 million daily active users on March 2, marking a staggering 183% increase since early January and a leap from five million daily users in early February.

This remarkable growth positions Claude ahead of competitors such as Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity in mobile engagement, although ChatGPT remains the undisputed leader in the AI space, with 250.5 million daily active users across iOS and Android.

Anthropic has also reported that Claude is attracting over one million new sign-ups daily, while retaining its No. 1 ranking on the U.S. App Store over the past weekend.

Impressively, the app now ranks first in 15 other countries, including Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Switzerland, and the U.K.

Experts suggest that Claude’s surging popularity is not merely a reflection of its technological capabilities but also a testament to its principled stance in a controversial moment a rare combination of ethics and innovation in the AI world.
