Australia’s third match of the T20 World Cup will be against Oman on Tuesday, and a victory in Antigua could secure their spot in the quarterfinals, allowing them the opportunity to rest some key players for the Scotland game.
Andrew McDonald, the head coach of Australia, didn’t dismiss the possibility of resting key players for the Scotland match, but he emphasized that their first task is to defeat Oman.
“We need a win to guarantee a way through. After that, once we’ve firmed up qualification, we can then look at that potential,” McDonald stated.
England’s opening match of the tournament against Scotland was rained off, resulting in both teams earning a point. In their second match, they were defeated by Australia, while Scotland triumphed over Oman and Namibia. The reigning champions’ prospects of advancing to the Super 8 are now out of their control.
“We’re not really focused on England and where they are at,” McDonald commented. “England have clearly got their own work to do in their next couple of games. We were put in a similar situation in the last World Cup where we had to chase net run rate and it’s always difficult, depending on other results. But that’s for them to work through.”
To advance to the Super 8 stage, England must not only win their remaining matches against Namibia and Oman, but also hope for favorable outcomes in other matches.
If England wins both of their remaining matches and Scotland loses to Australia, both teams would end up with five points. In this scenario, the Net Run Rate (NRR) would be crucial.
England will aim to not only win their remaining matches, but also to do so by a significant margin in order to boost their NRR. This is because Scotland already has a strong NRR of 2.164.
If both England and Scotland finish with 5 points, the team with the higher NRR will advance to the Super 8 stage.
