Scorching temperatures raise safety concerns at FIFA World Cup

NEW YORK: An intense heatwave sweeping across the eastern and central United States is raising concerns about player and spectator safety during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with forecasters warning that a knockout match this weekend could become the hottest of the tournament.

Meteorologists expect temperatures to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) during the July 5 match between France national football team and Paraguay national football team, with heat index values forecast to range from 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 to 46.1 degrees Celsius).

The conditions could expose players, match officials and thousands of fans attending the open-air stadium to heightened risks of heat-related illness.

Under current FIFA guidelines, matches may be postponed only if the wet-bulb globe temperature a measure that accounts for heat, humidity, wind and solar radiation reaches 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).

Earlier in the tournament, French players relied on field sprinklers to cool down during a match against Sweden national football team played in temperatures of about 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius).

FIFA regulations require cooling breaks during each half when temperatures are high, though some players and medical experts have called for longer or additional breaks under extreme conditions.

The heat also poses risks for spectators, particularly those consuming alcohol, which can increase the likelihood of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Tournament organizers and host cities have said they will provide shaded areas, hydration stations and cooling zones at stadiums and FIFA Fan Festivals to help protect fans during periods of extreme heat.
