Naomi Osaka produced one of the standout performances of Wimbledon 2026 on Sunday, stunning world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to book her place in the quarter-finals and dramatically reshape the women’s draw.
The 14th seed overcame Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6(2) on Centre Court, combining aggressive returning with calm, controlled shot-making to neutralise the top seed’s power game throughout the contest.
Sabalenka struggled to settle in the opening set, with unforced errors disrupting her rhythm as Osaka dictated play and raced through the first set in 32 minutes.
The second set offered more resistance from the top seed, who pushed the match into a tiebreak. However, Osaka remained composed under pressure and dominated the breaker 7-2 to seal a straight-sets victory.

The win ended Sabalenka’s 21-match unbeaten run in Grand Slam tiebreaks and secured Osaka’s first-ever Wimbledon quarter-final appearance. The Belarusian reacted in visible frustration after the defeat, striking a ball out of Centre Court following match point.
Osaka said after the match that she was grateful for the opportunity to play on Centre Court and described the contest as enjoyable, adding that previous losses against Sabalenka motivated her to change the outcome.
The result follows a series of major upsets in the women’s draw, with defending champion Iga Swiatek and second seed Elena Rybakina also eliminated earlier in the tournament, leaving the title race wide open heading into the second week.
Osaka will now face 10th seed Karolína Muchová in the quarter-finals, after Muchová defeated fellow Czech player Barbora Krejčíková, ensuring another first-time Wimbledon women’s champion this year.
