Sri Lanka, batting first, posted a massive total of 531 in their first innings, breaking several records along the way. Bangladesh began their innings well, but the Sri Lankan bowlers kept the pressure on, taking regular wickets and causing Bangladesh to collapse from 96-1 to 130-6, before being bowled out for 178.
Despite this, Bangladesh made a strong comeback in Sri Lanka’s second innings, reducing them to 15-2 in the third over. They continued to take wickets throughout the day, leaving Sri Lanka at 102-6 by the end of the day, with a lead of 455 runs.
A light-hearted moment occurred five overs before the end of the day’s play. Prabath Jayasuriya edged a delivery from Hasan Mahmud through the gully region. Bangladesh had positioned four slips and a backward point – all of whom sprinted after the ball in an attempt to stop it from reaching the boundary.
In the end, it was the fielder at backward point who managed to slide and stop the ball. He then passed it to the fielder who had run from third slip, who subsequently threw it back to the wicketkeeper.
Hasan Mahmud, making his debut, gave Bangladesh a reason to celebrate by taking 4-51, while Khaled Ahmed also troubled the Sri Lankan batsmen, taking 2-29. However, Angelo Mathews remained not out on 39, alongside Prabath Jayasuriya, who was not out on three, as they aimed to extend Sri Lanka’s lead with the help of the lower order.
Earlier, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, and Jayasuriya each took two wickets as Sri Lanka claimed nine wickets in two sessions, leaving Bangladesh in a difficult position. Dharshana Gamage, Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach, praised the efforts of both teams.
“Both teams’ bowlers, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka bowled really well. We need to score another 50-60 runs, then we will be in a good position. I am pretty sure our bowlers will fight back,” Gamage commented.
