Amir Disagrees with Rizwan on T20I Opening Pair Shake-Up

  • Amir disputes Rizwan's T20I opening pair shift.
  • Amir urges patience for young players like Ayub.
  • New Ayub-Rizwan opening pair struggles in ongoing T20I series.
Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has responded to wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan's comments regarding the shake-up of the T20I opening pair. After the fourth T20I defeat against New Zealand, Rizwan expressed concerns about breaking the successful partnership with Babar Azam, stating that it had negatively impacted Pakistan.

Amir, in a subtle but pointed response, took to social media, seemingly directing his remarks at Rizwan. Refraining from explicitly mentioning Rizwan, Amir used the term 'Bhai Jaan' (brother) in his tweet, implying that Rizwan is not giving enough time for the 21-year-old Ayub to establish his position. Amir highlighted his own experience of enjoying four years at the top order and suggested that there's no harm if youngsters fail for a few games when trying new things, emphasizing the need to give them time.

The disagreement between Amir and Rizwan stems from the decision to break the opening partnership of Rizwan and Babar, who had opened together in 51 T20I innings, accumulating 2,400 runs at an impressive average of 48.97. While their strike rate was a subject of debate, the duo provided stability at the top of the order.

Ahead of the T20Is against New Zealand, the team management opted for a change, promoting Saim Ayub alongside Rizwan and moving Babar down the order. The new opening pair of Ayub and Rizwan, however, has failed to produce the desired results, scoring only 69 runs in the four T20Is at an average of 17.25. Pakistan has faced defeats in all four matches of the series.

The rift between Amir and Rizwan highlights the challenges and debates within the team regarding strategic decisions and the balance between experimentation and continuity in team dynamics. As the T20I series unfolds, it remains to be seen how the team management addresses these concerns and whether further changes will be made to the opening pair for future matches.
