Afghanistan creates history after securing first ever T20 World Cup semifinal spot

On Tuesday, Afghanistan secured an 8-run victory over Bangladesh using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in the T20 World Cup 2024 at Arnos Vale Ground, St Vincent. This win propelled Afghanistan into the semi-finals, while Bangladesh and Australia were eliminated from contention.

Under Rashid Khan’s captaincy, Afghanistan reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time. Despite a rain-adjusted target of 114 runs in 19 overs, Bangladesh was dismissed for 105 in 17.5 overs. Litton Das’ unbeaten 54 from 49 balls wasn’t enough as his team fell short.

Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq were standout bowlers, each taking four wickets. Rain delays added suspense to the game, which had implications for the semi-final qualifications. Bangladesh needed a quick chase, Australia hoped for a late Bangladesh win, and Afghanistan aimed for any win.

Afghanistan chose to bat first, setting a score of 115-5. Rishad Hossain’s bowling was pivotal, claiming three wickets. Gurbaz led Afghanistan’s batting with 43 runs, while Rashid Khan’s swift 19 not out included three sixes.

With India, England, and South Africa already in the semi-finals, Afghanistan’s win determined the last spot. Afghanistan will now play South Africa, and England will face India on June 27 in the semi-finals.
