Bangkok /Border Region, July 24–25, 2025: Thailand has announced martial law in eight districts along its Cambodia border, as deadly fighting intensified between Thai and Cambodian forces. Seven districts in Chanthaburi province and one in Trat province are now under military control following two days of heavy exchanges involving artillery, rockets, F‑16 airstrikes, and landmine explosions
The clashes broke out on May 28, reigniting a long-standing territorial dispute near the Ta Muen Thom and Preah Vihear temple areas, but escalated sharply on July 24, when soldiers and civilians were wounded and killed on both sides
At least 14 civilians and one Thai soldier have died, with dozens injured in Thailand. Cambodia has also reported its first fatality
Thai authorities say the measures came in response to Cambodia’s use of heavy firepower, including rocket strikes and landmines that breached Thai territory
In turn, Cambodia has accused Thai airstrikes of targeting civilians and UNESCO heritage sites, raising accusations of potential war crimes
Foreign travel warnings and diplomatic action have followed. Thailand has recalled its ambassador to Cambodia and expelled Cambodia’s envoy. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency session
