The Punjab government is taking big steps toward a greener future with the launch of an electric bus service in the Sargodha Division, just in time for Independence Day. The initiative aims to provide affordable and eco-friendly transport to the public while easing the region’s environmental burden.
In the first phase of the project, 48 electric buses will begin operations in Sargodha. Khushab will receive 12 buses, while Mianwali and Bhakkar will each get 6. The service is set to officially roll out on August 14.
To make public transport more accessible, the government will offer free rides to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and students. Officials are optimistic that the new green fleet will modernize transportation in these areas and set the foundation for cleaner urban mobility across Punjab.
Meanwhile, Lahore is preparing for another exciting upgrade: an electric tram system. The provincial government has reportedly placed an order with China for the first tram, and according to some media outlets, the initial consignment has already arrived in Pakistan. While no formal statement has been made yet, the pilot project is expected to run along Canal Road—from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura or Jallo Park. These electric trams can carry up to 250 passengers and travel 27 kilometers on just a 10-minute charge. If successful, the project will expand to cities like Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
Earlier this year, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated Lahore’s first fully electric bus service. The buses are equipped with modern features like GPS tracking, Wi-Fi, USB ports, ramps for the disabled, anti-slip flooring, and security cameras to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
With these initiatives, Punjab is embracing a cleaner, smarter future one ride at a time.
