ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to women diplomats on the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, praising their role in advancing dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation among nations.
In a message issued ahead of the observance on June 24, Zardari said women diplomats had played a vital role in strengthening international engagement and supporting the peaceful resolution of disputes, often under difficult and uncertain circumstances.
He highlighted the contributions of prominent Pakistani figures, including Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan, Begum Shaista Ikramullah and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, saying they helped elevate Pakistan’s profile on the global stage and promoted human rights and international cooperation.
Zardari said Pakistani women have served in senior diplomatic roles as ambassadors, permanent representatives, foreign secretaries and heads of mission, representing the country in bilateral and multilateral forums, including the United Nations.
He said women diplomats have helped safeguard Pakistan’s interests while maintaining channels of communication during periods of heightened tensions and complex negotiations.
At a time marked by armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, climate challenges and evolving security threats, their role remains essential to promoting peace, progress and prosperity, he said.
Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to equal opportunities in public service, noting that the constitution guarantees equal rights and that an increasing number of Pakistani women are serving with distinction in diplomatic missions and international organizations.
He also pointed to Pakistan’s recent facilitation of a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran as an example of the value of sustained engagement and quiet diplomacy.

“On this day, I extend appreciation to all women diplomats of Pakistan, past and present,” Zardari said. “Their service has strengthened Pakistan’s standing abroad and added substance to its diplomatic work.”
