Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presented Pakistan’s firm position on climate change, Israeli and Indian aggression, trade, tourism, and energy cooperation during the 16th ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) Heads of State Summit, held in Khankendi, Azerbaijan.
Congratulations to Azerbaijan on Hosting the ECO Summit:
The Prime Minister congratulated President Ilham Aliyev for successfully hosting the ECO Summit and expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality in Khankendi. He also appreciated Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev for his previous services as ECO Chairman.Call for Joint Action to Combat Climate Change:
PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the world is witnessing rapid technological transformation, leading to increased interdependence and knowledge-sharing.He stressed that joint efforts are essential to tackle climate change, especially as ECO member states face threats like melting glaciers, heatwaves, floods, and droughts.
He reminded the forum that Pakistan is among the top 10 countries most affected by climate change, with over 33 million people impacted by the devastating 2022 floods.
Referring to Pakistan’s four-point climate action plan, the Prime Minister proposed:
- Reduction in carbon emissions
- Establishment of a carbon market platform
- Strengthening of environmental financing mechanisms
Strong Condemnation of Israeli Aggression and India’s Irresponsible Actions:
PM Shehbaz strongly condemned Israel’s illegal attacks on Iran, calling them a deliberate attempt to destabilize the region. He also criticized India’s ongoing oppression in occupied Kashmir and its violations of the Indus Waters Treaty.He warned that India's weaponizing water poses a direct threat to Pakistan’s 240 million people and constitutes a serious act of aggression.
Solidarity with the Oppressed People of Palestine:
The Prime Minister condemned Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza, stating it feels like “humanity no longer exists” there. He reaffirmed that Pakistan stands with the oppressed anywhere in the world, including the Palestinians.Emphasis on Regional Growth, Trade, Tourism, and Energy Cooperation:
PM Shehbaz urged ECO countries to accelerate cooperation in trade, investment, energy corridors, transport, and tourism. He called for the effective implementation of the ECO Trade Agreement, transforming it into a major regional trade framework.He also expressed gratitude for naming Lahore as the ECO Tourism Capital for 2027, calling it the cultural heart of Pakistan and warmly inviting all dignitaries to visit.
Commitment to Unity and Solidarity:
In conclusion, the Prime Minister urged ECO member states to channel their collective strength toward peace, development, and prosperity.
