ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated his government’s firm commitment to safeguarding and promoting press freedom in Pakistan while ensuring a secure, dignified and enabling environment for journalists and media professionals.

In his message on World Press Freedom Day observed on May 3 the Prime Minister extended heartfelt appreciation to journalists, columnists, reporters, editors, broadcasters, and all members of the media community in Pakistan and across the world for their dedicated and selfless contributions.

He said that responsible journalism plays a vital role in building an informed, aware, and enlightened society. According to him, the timely dissemination of accurate, impartial, and unbiased information remains the foundation of credible journalism and public trust.

The Prime Minister stressed that journalists must uphold the highest standards of professional ethics by actively countering propaganda, fake news, and the spread of unverified information. He said media practitioners are not only custodians of journalistic values but also play a key role in safeguarding societal norms and public interest.

Highlighting this year’s theme “Shaping a Peaceful Future,” he said it reflects the importance of responsible journalism in today’s interconnected world. He noted that peace is not achieved through diplomacy alone, but also through credible reporting, responsible communication, and informed public discourse that helps build understanding between nations.

He further stated that the media holds immense potential to promote constructive engagement and strengthen diplomatic, economic, and social relations at the global level. He added that accurate representation of facts and perspectives can contribute meaningfully to resolving complex issues and fostering long-term peace.

He added that Pakistan continues to play a positive and responsible role internationally in promoting de-escalation, stability, and peaceful coexistence, a contribution that has also been acknowledged by international media.

He also appreciated the role of the national media during critical national moments, stating that it has consistently demonstrated responsibility by promoting unity, countering misinformation, and presenting Pakistan’s stance with clarity and accuracy during sensitive situations, including “Marka-e-Haq” and “Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos.”

Paying tribute to journalists who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, the Prime Minister said their courage and dedication serve as a powerful reminder that press freedom is a priceless asset that must be protected at all costs.

He noted that the media landscape is rapidly evolving with technological advancements, where digital platforms now play a central role in shaping public opinion at both national and global levels.
