Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and India’s Neeraj Chopra are set to clash once again on the global stage as they compete for the gold medal in the javelin throw event at the upcoming World Athletics Championship, scheduled for September 18 in Tokyo.
Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic champion from Tokyo. 2020, is in exceptional form heading into the event. Meanwhile, Arshad Nadeem, who made history with a record-breaking 92.97-meter throw at the Paris Olympics, is making a comeback after recovering from injury.
The two athletes have previously expressed mutual admiration. Arshad’s mother once celebrated Neeraj’s success, while Neeraj’s mother affectionately referred to Arshad as “like a son.” However, recent political tensions between the two nations have cast a shadow over their camaraderie.
Following a military and skirmish between India and Pakistan earlier this year in May, both athletes have publicly distanced themselves from any notion of a close friendship. Neeraj stated, “We were never close friends, just professionals who respected each other’s performances.” Arshad echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Winning and losing is part of the game — that’s the extent of our connection.”
This growing rivalry has added an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the upcoming championship. Arshad, after undergoing successful surgery in July, has resumed intense training. On the other hand, Neeraj recorded a season-best throw of 90.23 meters earlier this year in Doha.
