Punjab Govt recommends ban on social media during Muharram

LAHORE: The Punjab Government has recommended to ban social media from 6th to 11th Muharram to control spread of hate material and misinformation to avoid sectarian violence.

The Punjab Home Department has recommended banning social media in the province during Muharram, for which a letter has been sent to the Federal interior secretary.

In the letter, it has been recommended that the services of social media platforms should be suspended from 6th to 11th of Muharram in Punjab in light of the decision of the Cabinet Standing Committee on Law and Order.

It has been recommended to suspend the services of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and TikTok.

Punjab Home Department has also informed Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority(PTA), Inspector General of Police(IGP) Punjab, Additional IGs Special Branch and CTD in this regard.

However, the final decision to ban social media will be taken by the federal government.

On the other hand, Federal government declined multiple provincial requests to restrict access to social media platforms during a few days of Muharram ul Haram.

The Provincial authorities had proposed suspending six social media applications for about a week during Muharram due to security concerns.
