Pakistani singer and social activist Shehzad Roy recently opened up about the true motivation behind his humanitarian work, emphasizing that it’s never been about earning religious rewards, or sawab.
Roy, who is as well-known for his social activism as he is for his music, has long been dedicated to making a difference in Pakistan. While his music career has brought him fame, his heart has always been in the work he does through his Zindagi Trust, an organization he’s been running for years to improve education across the country.
In a recent interview, Roy set the record straight, saying, "Whatever I have done so far in the fields of education or for hospitals has not been for the sake of earning sawab." This is different from the way his mother approaches charity, as she often engages in acts like helping those in need or feeding the hungry with the intention of gaining religious merit.
But for Roy, the driving force has always been about making lasting, meaningful change, not about seeking rewards. “I focus on reformative work because if we start treating education and hospitals as charity, these sectors will deteriorate,” he said. Roy’s ultimate goal is to create a world where everyone has equal access to education, regardless of their economic background.
