Veteran Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar has witnessed Aamir Khan’s rise over the decades. Akhtar began his Bollywood journey the same year Khan was born, and Khan later starred in films written by him. With a special film festival set to celebrate the actor’s 60th birthday, Akhtar is the ideal person to reflect on Khan’s career.
At an event, Javed Saab stated that he had predicted Aamir would become a superstar. The screenwriter further added, "I know I'm putting my neck on the line. But I've done it before and have been proven right."
The senior artist stated, "Today, I predict that the film Aamir is making will connect with everyone and become a super hit." Praising the “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” actor, Akhtar highlighted Aamir's magic in betting on unconventional films. Reflecting on the past, the lyricist recalled advising Mr. Perfectionist against doing “Lagaan” and even attempting to convince him otherwise.
He warned Khan about the potential issues with the movie, but instead of abandoning the project, Aamir listed those concerns and incorporated them into the script. After watching the first cut of the 2001 sports drama “Lagaan”, Javed Ji was completely blown away. Praising the “Fanaa” actor further, the screenwriter emphasized that most people don’t create films like “Taare Zameen Par” or take on roles in movies like “Dangal”.
The Bollywood veteran stated that no one in their right mind would have taken on the role of an aging father who loses to his daughter in wrestling in “Dangal”. However, unlike others, Aamir believes in characters and stories, even collaborating with directors who have yet to deliver box office hits.
Aamir collaborated with a new director, Farhan Akhtar, who introduced “Dil Chahta Hai”, a film centered on a hero. During the making of “Rang De Basanti”, he sat quietly in a corner, allowing other actors to take the spotlight. Reflecting on the past, the “Sholay” writer shared that Aamir starred in the first film he had written.
While writing the film “Faryaaz” in Panchgani for Nasir Hussain, Akhtar noticed the young Aamir Khan and immediately told Hussain that the boy was a star who should debut in a romantic film. Interestingly, Aamir Khan’s first film was both produced and written by Javed Akhtar. Additionally, Javed’s son also worked on his first film with Khan.
Aamir Khan is currently working on his next film, “Sitaare Zameen Par”, a sequel to his 2007 hit “Taare Zameen Par”, which also marks his directorial debut. For those unaware, “Cinema Ka Jaadugar: The Aamir Khan Film Festival” will take place from March 14 to 27, showcasing some of the acclaimed films from the actor’s career.
