The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) plans to issue new currency notes starting in the second half of 2025, as announced by Governor Jameel Ahmad.
The new series of notes will feature enhanced security measures and will gradually replace the current currency. The rollout will be conducted one denomination at a time, rather than introducing all denominations simultaneously.
Governor Ahmad shared that the SBP is working to secure federal cabinet approval for the new notes within the next few months, with a target date set before June 2025. However, the specific denomination to be launched first has yet to be determined.
Pakistan's existing currency notes include denominations of Rs10, Rs20, Rs50, Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000, and Rs5,000. The updated notes are expected to offer improved protection against counterfeiting, aligning with international standards.
Ahmad clarified that the new currency notes will not enter circulation before the start of the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which begins in July 2025.
The initiative reflects the SBP’s commitment to modernizing the country’s financial system while ensuring a secure and efficient currency for public use. Further details on the rollout schedule are expected to be shared in the coming months.
