Mazda Recalls 77,000 MX-5 Sports Cars in US Over Safety Concerns

  • NHTSA issues recall for over 77,000 Mazda MX-5 Miata vehicles due to airbag sensor control module defect.
  • The defect could cause excessive force deployment during minor collisions, posing injury risk.
  • The recall affects all current-generation MX-5 models produced between April 20, 2015, and November 2, 2023.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for over 77,000 Mazda MX-5 Miata vehicles due to a defect in the airbag sensor control module.

The faulty module may cause airbags to deploy with excessive force during minor collisions, posing a risk of injury, particularly to occupants not wearing seat belts.

According to the NHTSA, the issue affects Mazda MX-5 Miatas manufactured between April 20, 2015, and November 2, 2023, encompassing nearly all current-generation MX-5 models. Mazda confirmed that 100% of the vehicles produced during this period are impacted by the defect. However, as of September 11, 2024, no accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported.

Additionally, 15,835 Fiat 124 Spiders, built between March 1, 2016, and August 31, 2020, and sharing the same platform, are also being recalled for the same sensor defect.

Mazda has notified its dealers, and owner notification letters are expected to be sent by November 17, 2024. Dealers will fix the issue by reprogramming the airbag sensor control module with updated software, and the repair will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners.
